Something To Learn: The Parable Of The Talents (The Parable Of The Bags Of Gold)

​Your talent is God's gift to you. What you do with it is your gift back to God.

Jesus told a story, The Parable of the Talents or The Parable of the Bags of Gold. There was a man who lent some bags of gold to three people who worked for him. To the first one, he gave five bags of gold, to the second one he gave two bags, and to the last one, he gave one bag. The man entrusted his wealth according to their ability. Then the man went away for a journey. While he was gone, two of the people worked hard and used their gold to earn more gold to give back to the man. But the last person who had received one bag went off. He just buried his gold because he was afraid of losing it. When the man came back, he gave rewards to those who increased the golds he lent them. But he took the golds away from the person who hadn’t tried to increase it.

We Should Learn

Teaches Us That Success Is A Product Of Our Work

• Spiritual success is working diligently using all the talents God has given us to serve the common good.

Teaches Us That God Has Given Us All That We Need

• We are God's handiwork, created to do good works. He gives us the gift of talents and skills to generate a return towards productive ends.

Teaches Us That We Are All Equally Rewarded

• Diversity is woven into the fabric of creation. We may not have equal talents but the reward given by God is the same. He measures success by degrees of effort.

Teaches Us Not To Work For Selfish Purposes

• We work in a fallen world. Because of the curse of sin, work will be difficult. But we should feel satisfaction and joy from doing our best with what God has given us in the place where His providence put us. We should maximize use of our talents not for selfish purposes.

​Teaches Us That We Will Be Held Accountable

• The Parable of the Talents or The Parable of the Bags of Gold is about how we use our work to fulfill our earthly callings; about whole-life stewardship. We are responsible for what we do with what we have been given, and one day we will held accountable.

​Like the man in the parable, God has given each of us a special abilities or talents. You have to work hard to make your talents and skills grow.
