SEC Warns the Public against Facebook Pages Used in Advance Fee Scam

The public is reminded to avoid transacting with companies or personalities on Facebook (FB) Pages that lack authorization and permission to offer, process, or lend on any platforms because they do not have the relevant license from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

​The said Facebook Pages are used in advance fee scams by offering loans to the public in exchange for an advance payment or deposit from their borrowers with the promise that the deposited money will be included in the loan proceeds. The scammers often use the modus operandi of claiming that the victim has provided a wrong bank account number and is required to pay a “penalty” for the mistake.

Part of this modus operandi is for the scammer to advise their victim to switch from Facebook Messenger to Telegram in order to process the promised loan.  There are also instances where fake borrowers who have received loans from the company are supposedly included in the “group chat” to further encourage the victims to pursue their loan.

The fraud method also includes the use of documents that will show that the company is supposedly registered with the SEC, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and National Privacy Commission (NPC) and has business permits from the local government to further reassure the victim that they are borrowing from a legitimate company.
